MdM-GREECE IN UKRAINE
MdM-Greece is present in Ukraine since 2022. Initially responding to emergency created following the Russian invasion of Feb 24, 2022, MdM-Greece has partnered with local organizations in Chernivtsi and Sumy, has forwarded significant loads of humanitarian aid in the country, has operated Medical Mobile Units facilitating access to PHC for rural and isolated communities and has rehabilitated and equipped hospitals to support the local health system.
Emergency Phase
Driven by the solidarity of Greek people and the strong will and commitment of our volunteers, MdM-Greece team headed to the borders between Romania and Ukraine, in Siret in order to provide first-aid and emergency medical services to the people in transit, that were forced to leave the country seeking safety.
Phase II
Following visits to several regions of Chernivtsi Oblast and direct meetings with local authorities, MdM-Greece in collaboration has partnered with chernivtsi regional Council and since June 2022 is supporting the local health system by deploying its MMU in the area, which performs medical visits in the nearby villages as well as transfers of patients in need of specialized treatment.
Phase III
Expansion of Activities
Odessa Oblast | Provision of PHC and MHPSS services to IDPs and local vulnerable population, in collaboration with local NGO Way Home.
Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast | Deployment of a MMU in Kuty Hromada, which supported the local health system and performed medical visits in remote villages in the rural areas
Phase IV
Developing Multi-purpose / multi-sector Activities
Rehabilitation of Health Facilities | Repairs in infrastructure of selected health facilities in Chernivtsi and Sumy Oblasts
Fill the MHPSS gap – Capacity building | Field research at the community level to identify the potential, needs and gaps in the provision of mental health services.

MdM-Greece, with the support of the World Bank, has also implemented MhGAP and PM+ trainings aiming to build the capacities of local health professionals and other responders to the ongoing crisis and unfold evidence-based, low-intensity MHPSS interventions performed by non-specialists. The “Beyond Trauma” project builds upon MdM-Greece activities, supported by World Bank (MHPSS), Americares (PHC, MMU, MHPSS) and Japanese MoFa (rehabilitation, MHPSS and capacity building).
Presently, MdM-Greece partners with RDA Sumy and retains a team of 12 expat and national staff. For the development of MHPSS activities and objectives, the organization collaborates with Prof. V. Korostiy MD, PhD, DMSc in Kharkiv National Medical University and Em Prof Cultural Psychiatry and Global Mental Health Amsterdam University / Boston University, Dr. Joop De Joop. MdM-Greece has been awarded with the European Citizens’ prize by EU Parliament for its work in Ukraine.
In the spirit of localization, MdM-Greece supports local (health) systems and economy and collaborates with local partners that are spearheading its ground operations, especially in challenging areas such as Sumy.

European Citizen’s Prize
The award ceremony took place on Tuesday 8 November 2022 in the Plenary Chamber of the European Parliament in Brussels. The award was presented by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mrs. Dita Charanzová, to the President of Médecins du Monde Greece, Mrs. Hara Tziouvaras, who said “We would like to thank the Members of the European Parliament for this honorable distinction which recognizes the work of Médecins du Monde Greece in the defense of human rights, service and solidarity. Drawing on our many years of experience, Médecins du Monde has been able to respond directly and effectively to the needs of thousands of people displaced from Ukraine in search of safety. We would also like to thank all those who have supported us – and continue to support us – by volunteering or assisting us with financial and material aid. The trust they have shown once again in Doctors of the World Greece, fills us with optimism for all that we can achieve together, as active members of Civil Society.”
