Memorandum of Cooperation with BSMU
October 14, 2025

On October 13, a meeting took place between the Rector of Bukovinian State Medical University, Professor Ihor Herush, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Associate Professor Volodymyr Khodorovskyi, and representatives of the international humanitarian organization Médecins du Monde – Greece (MdM-Greece) in Ukraine — Elli Xenou, Senior Specialist for Programs and Advocacy, and Professor Volodymyr Korostii, Scientific Supervisor of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Direction at Kharkiv National Medical University.
During the meeting, participants discussed the implementation of the memorandum of cooperation between BSMU and MdM-Greece. Rector I. Herush highly praised the contribution of the humanitarian organization MdM-Greece in training BSMU specialists on the implementation of the WHO “mhGAP Guide for the Management of Mental, Neurological, and Substance Use Disorders in Non-Specialized Health Settings”, both in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Elli Xenou and Volodymyr Korostii provided updates on the implementation of the project “Beyond Trauma”, aimed at expanding community-level mental health services for children and youth at risk in conflict-affected regions of Ukraine. The project includes research in the field of mental health and psychosocial support within the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernivtsi regions. The goal of the study is to explore youth awareness of mental health issues, their coping behaviors, support systems, and ways to strengthen youth well-being.
Additionally, the project foresees training of specialists and the implementation of the “Inner Strengths Program: A Positive Mental Health (PMH) Module for Youth and Families” — a mental health and psychosocial support program designed to promote positive mental health among Ukrainian adolescents, youth, and families.
One of the program’s developers, Dr. Tom Hendricks from Tilburg University (Netherlands), recently visited BSMU and participated in a group session conducted under this program for first-year students of the “Medical Psychology” specialty. The session was led by BSMU staff members Associate Professor Oleksandr Polishchuk and Lecturer Matvii Dariichuk.
