Summer camps in Ukraine

July 23, 2025

Summer camps in Ukraine have long been a vital part of children’s education, recreation, and social development.

But due to the ongoing war, damaged infrastructure, and insecurity, their operation has become extremely limited—further burdening young people growing up in conflict.

This summer, in the peaceful countryside of Chernivtsi, far from the reality of war, a camp for children and teens up to 16 years old offered a rare opportunity for rest, joy, and a sense of normalcy.

Organized by AFEW-Ukraine in partnership with MdM Greece and Dokters van de Wereld (NL), War Child Nederland, and USSF, and funded by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), the initiative focused on mental health, resilience, and psychosocial well-being.
Psychosocial support for children and young people is a priority for MdM and its partners, who aim to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s population. For children from Kharkiv and Chernivtsi in particular, this initiative offered a unique opportunity to feel safe again and regain a sense of normalcy alongside their peers.

Through play, sports, and interactive activities, children learned to manage emotions, stress, and the insecurity made worse by war—guided by trained professionals using methods adapted to conflict settings.

Meanwhile, #MdM staff were trained by War Child in the “Be There” approach, which strengthens child resilience by supporting parents and caregivers. The training took place in Vinnytsia, a city with few prior attacks, but which was sadly bombed during our stay—part of the escalating violence affecting civilians across Ukraine in late 2025.
